Does the Bible support the doctrines of Jehovah's Witnesses?

Part 3 - The Gospel & the Kingdom of God

In Part 1 we dealt with 'The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ.'
In Part 2 we dealt with 'The Deity and Person of the Holy Spirit.'
In this, Part 3, we deal with 'The Gospel and the Kingdom of God.'

We first need to establish what 'gospel' The Watchtower teaches.

This is the front cover of The Watchtower, January 1, 1990.

The term 'Good News' is the modern equivalent of the word 'gospel.' But the question is,
IS THE WATCHTOWER 'GOOD NEWS' THE SAME AS THE BIBLICAL GOSPEL?

It is necessary to go back to the year 1980, to the October 1st Watchtower to learn from their own publication whether or not The Watchtower 'good news' is the same as the Biblical 'gospel.'
The importance of this comparison is seen clearly in Scripture.
The apostle Paul wrote:
Galatians 1:6-7 -"I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ." (KJV)

Paul went on to say:
Galatians 1:8 -  "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. (KJV)

Let us see what The Watchtower has to say about the 'good news' that it has preached throughout the world.

"But the Kingdom witnessing of Jehovah's Witnesses since 1914 has been far different from what Christendom's missionaries have published both before and since 1914." [Watchtower Oct. 1, 1980, p.28.]
So even The Watchtower admits that their 'good news' is different from the normally preached 'gospel.' But, how is it different? The Watchtower Society claims that Jehovah God has finished using the churches of Christendom, and has turned to using their organization, and that they alone can understand the Bible, for only they are directed by God's Spirit.

They also contend that the gospel preached in the early days of Christianity is not the same as the gospel to be preached in these days, which they claim are the days of the 'time of the end.'

What they have done, however, is manufactured their own 'good news,' which is very different from the simple gospel of Scripture.

THE WATCHTOWER 'GOOD NEWS.'

They teach that the Kingdom of God has been given to a relatively few persons - these few they call the 'little flock,' the '144,000,' and the 'heavenly class.' Apparently, God only redeems this small flock from the earth to be in the heavenly government.

In their 1985 book, 'Reasoning from the Scriptures,' they have the following to say:
'When Jesus spoke about being born again he said that it was necessary in order to enter the Kingdom of God, that is, to be part of God's Kingdom, his heavenly government.' [REASONING BOOK, Page 80, par. 1.]

'Kingdom' may refer to the rulership of the one anointed as King or to the earthly realm ruled by that heavenly government.' [REASONING BOOK, Page 226, top para.]

What they say is that the word 'Kingdom' is the same as 'government.' Therefore, seeing that a government rules over people, only a small number go to heaven to be in that government.

THE WATCHTOWER ARGUMENT.

Imagine that you are sitting round the table with a Jehovah's Witness, and the 'witness' is sharing The Watchtower's 'good news' with you. (The Watchtower Bible, NWT, is quoted here.)

NB. This is a real example of how the JW's go 'on & on & on & on.'

JW. - "We read here in Matthew 24:14 that 'This good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness.' NWT.
Many do not know what that 'good news' is. The Bible tells us in Daniel 2:44 that 'the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be brought to ruin. ... It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms.' NWT.
Man has ruined this earth with corrupt rulership, so God has decided to set up his own heavenly government. You may have been told that when you die you are going to heaven. But think seriously. If everyone went to heaven, and became part of that heavenly government, who would they rule over? That is a false teaching. The Bible tells us in Matthew 5:5; Psalm 37:11; and Proverbs 2:21,22 that the earth is going to be inhabited, and will remain forever. It is this paradise earth that the heavenly government is going to rule over.
The heavenly government is made up of 144,000, with Christ Jesus as the King of that government.
1st, notice what Luke 12:32 tells us. "Have no fear, little flock, because YOUR Father has approved of giving YOU the kingdom." NWT.
The number in this government was revealed to the apostle John in Revelation 7 and 14. See here in Revelation 7:4. "And I heard the number of those who were sealed, a hundred and forty-four thousand." NWT.
In Revelation 5:9,10 it shows how these ones are made to be "a kingdom and priests to our God, and they are to rule as kings over the earth." NWT.
2nd, let us see what the Bible has to say about others among mankind. Here in John 10:16 Jesus mentions the rest of mankind. "And I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; those also I must bring, and they will listen to my voice, and they will become one flock, one shepherd." NWT.
All who have ever lived, and who Jehovah wants to bless are numbered among these other sheep. There is another group amongst these other sheep who have another name. Here in Revelation 7:9 it says: "After these things, I saw, and, look! a great crowd, which no man was able to number.." NWT.
You asked the question, 'Are all Jehovah's Witnesses born again?'
The straight answer to that is 'No.' That doesn't mean we are not Christians, but we have come to understand spiritual things more fully than the churches of Christendom. In our 'Reasoning' book, we can read this:
BORN AGAIN
Definition: Being born again involves being baptized in water ("born from water") and begotten by God's spirit ("born from ...spirit"), thus becoming a son of God with the prospect of sharing in the Kingdom of God. (John 3:3-5) Jesus had this experience, as do the 144,000 who are heirs with him of the heavenly Kingdom. [Reasoning book page 76, 1985 See picture p.2.]
You see, only those who are selected to be in that heavenly government with Christ Jesus are born again. These ones are born again, because they do go straight to heaven when they die, whereas the rest of mankind will either receive a resurrection back onto the new paradise earth, or will survive God's battle against wickedness, Armageddon, right into the new system.
Jesus mediates for the 'heavenly class' them before his Father, because they will have been changed into spiritual bodies in the twinkling of an eye. But those receiving God's blessings on an earthly paradise will prove their loyalty to Jehovah and his organization, and will be tested at the end of the 1,000 year millennium.
It is important for those who would please Jehovah to recognize that he has an organization that he is using exclusively on earth today, and side with that organization. Then, having survived Armageddon, it will be easy to remain loyal and obedient to his organization until, as this Watchtower publication shows:
Jehovah God will justify, declare righteous, on the basis of their own merit all perfected humans who have withstood that final, decisive test of mankind. He will adopt and acknowledge them as his sons through Jesus Christ. (Romans 8:33.) LIFE EVERLASTING-IN FREEDOM OF THE SONS OF GOD 1966 p.400.
Let me explain a little about the history of The Watchtower Society of Jehovah's Witnesses.

PHEW!!! I hope you haven't left me already. But that's what is really likely to happen. You will hardly get a word in, and they'll skip from Genesis to Revelation in the 'blink of an eye.' Let us leave this one way discussion at this point, and begin to address the issue of what the real gospel is all about.

Let us see what the Bible has to say, and then work out just why The Watchtower teaches a different gospel.

THE BIBLE GOSPEL.

The instructions of Jesus were:-
Luke 24:46-48 - (46) And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: (47) And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. (48) And ye are witnesses of these things. (KJV)
The apostle Paul wrote:-
1 Corinthians 2:2 - For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. (KJV)
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 - (3) For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; (4) And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: (KJV)
The apostle Peter preached:-
Acts 3:14-15 - (14) But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; (15) And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. (KJV)
There is no misunderstanding of what the Bible Gospel is. Even here there is a dispute between Bible teaching and the teaching of The Watchtower Society of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Earlier (go to reference) we read how The Watchtower admits that it teaches a different witness than Christian missionaries. [W/T Oct. 1, 1980, p.28.]

While The Watchtower does teach that Jesus died for our sins, and was raised the third day, they dispute the manner of Christ's death, and His bodily resurrection.

The manner of Christ's death.

From earliest times of written records concerning the crucifixion of Jesus, He is always depicted as dying on a cross. Even in blasphemous Roman graffiti from the days of the early church, Christ is depicted as hanging on a cross and being worshipped as God by a Christian.

Justus Lipsius of the 15th Century wrote a book illustrating the various forms of impalement used to torture victims, and depicts Christ as dying on a cross. [See Bethel ministries, Sept/Oct 1989, pp.1-3, and Refuting Jehovah's Witnesses by Randall Watters.]

The Watchtower uses this book by Justus, and says Jesus died, not on a cross, but on an upright stake. To support their view they use a picture from Lipsius's book. However, they do not use the picture Justus Lipsius used to describe Christ dying on the cross.
Page 661 of Lipsius's book where he says that Jesus died on a cross, but which is not used by The Watchtower.

Early Roman graffiti which says: 'Alexamenos worships his God,' showing Christ on a cross.

De Cruce, Liber Secundus, page 647, by Justus Lipsius, used by The Watchtower in their Kingdom Interlinear Bible p.1156, 1969 edition, & p.1150 1985 edition.
Picture from 'Jehovah's Witnesses - Proclaimers of God's Kingdom,' 1993, p.25.
.
In the beginning The Watchtower was proud to portray Christ's cross on the front of its magazine (illustration below).

You are probably thinking, 'Why does The Watchtower insist on torture stake, rather than cross?'
The Watchtower claims that the cross was a pagan sex symbol, and was adopted into Christendom a long time after the Bible was completed.
They also claim that the Greek doesn't say cross, but upright stake, 'stauros.'
  • 1st, yes, the cross has been used as a pagan sex symbol, but that doesn't prove Jesus didn't die on a cross.
  • 2nd, yes, the Greek word is 'stauros,' but there is a very simple explanation for this.
"According to the (Roman) literary sources, those condemned to crucifixion never carried the complete cross... Instead, only the crossbar was carried, while the upright was set in permanent place where it was used for subsequent executions. As the first century Jewish historian Josephus noted, wood was so scarce in Jerusalem during the first century A.D. that the Romans were forced to travel ten miles from Jerusalem to secure timber for their siege machinery."    [Biblical Archaeology Review, Nov/Dec. 1985, p.21.]

The real reason, I believe, that The Watchtower avoid the issue of Christ on the cross is because their 'rank & file' members might come to realize what the Lord Christ Jesus really did for them as individuals.

Earlier [go to reference], we saw how according to Watchtower teaching, only 144,000 are born again. Similarly, Christ, according to that same Watchtower teaching, is only the mediator for this special 144,000 class. The following quote is from THE WATCHTOWER , APRIL 1979

"QUESTIONS from READERS
• Is Jesus the ‘mediator" only for anointed Christians?
The term "mediator" occurs just six times in the Christian Greek Scriptures and Scripturally is always used regarding a formal covenant.
Moses was the "mediator" of the Law covenant made between God and the nation of Israel. (Gal. 3:19, 20). Christ, though, is the "mediator of a new covenant" between Jehovah and spiritual Israel, the "Israel of God" that will serve as kings and priests in heaven with Jesus, (Heb, 8:6: 9:15; 12:24; Gal. 6:16). At a time when God was selecting those to be taken into that new covenant, the apostle Paul wrote that Christ was the "one mediator between God and men." (1 Tim. 2:5). Reasonably Paul was here using the word "mediator" in the same way he did the other five times, which occurred before the writing of 1 Timothy 2:5, referring to those then being taken into the new covenant for which Christ is "mediator," So in this strict Biblical sense Jesus is the "mediator" only for anointed Chrtstians.
The new covenant will terminate with the glorification of the remnant who are today in that covenant mediated by Christ. The "great crowd" of "other sheep" that is forming today is not in that new covenant. However.......
THE WATCHTOWER — April 1st 1979, page 31, left-hand column.
It is all tied in together. By getting Jehovah's Witnesses to believe that the cross is a pagan sex symbol, they will mentally avoid entertaining the cross because of its connotations. Also, because the message of the cross is not preached in Watchtower Kingdom Halls [their meeting places], it is rarely uppermost in the minds of the 'rank & file' Jehovah's Witnesses.

However, more important than archaeological discoveries, is the internal Biblical evidence for the cross. There are two distinct Scriptural proofs for the correct use of the term 'cross' in the Bible.

1st. - Matthew 27:37 - "And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS." (KJV)
It would be physically impossible to place the inscription "over His head" if Jesus was impaled on a stake without the crossbeam. The inscription would have to above His hands. Should we claim that the Bible is in error on this point?

2nd. - John 20:25 -"The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe." (KJV)
The Bible uses the plural "nails." Had Christ been impaled on a single upright torture stake, only one nail would have been used.

Jesus was put to death on a cross, as supported by archaeology and Scripture.

The resurrection of Christ.

"Resurrection
Definition: Anastasis, the Greek word translated "resurrection," literally means "a standing up again" and it refers to a rising up from the death. The fuller expression "resurrection of (from) the dead" is used repeatedly in the Scriptures. ... Resurrection involves a reactivating of the life pattern of the individual, which pattern God has retained in his memory. According to God's will for the individual, the person is restored in either a human or a spirit body and yet retains his personal identity, having the same personality and memories as when he died."
[Reasoning book, 1985, p.333.]
Strong's Exhaustive Concordance says:-
386 anastasis {an-as'-tas-is}
from 450; TDNT - 1:371,60; n f
    1) a raising up, rising (e.g. from a seat)
    2) a rising from the dead
        2a) that of Christ
2b) that of all men at the end of this present age
2c) the resurrection of certain ones in history who were restored to life (Heb. 11:35)
Most persons would accept that resurrection means bringing back to life that which died.
A Biblical account of a physical resurrection deals with the literal resurrection of Lazarus in John 11:11,14-44. Lazarus was brought back to life though her had been dead for 4 days. His dead body came back to life.
Notice how The Watchtower subtly changes the meaning of resurrection. They tell us that:
"resurrection involves a reactivating of the life pattern of the individual, which pattern God has retained in his memory. According to God's will for the individual, the person is restored in either a human or a spirit body and yet retains his personal identity, having the same personality and memories as when he died."
Strange terminology until you discover that The Watchtower teaches that while at death the person goes out of existence, God retains a person's life pattern in His memory. At the appropriate time, God then puts that life pattern into either a human or a spirit body.

Notice that they don't tell us the life pattern goes back into the body that died. They simply tells us: 'in either a human or a spirit body.' If the original human body isn't used in The Watchtower type resurrection, that means they are really teaching a form of 'reincarnation.'

The Watchtower disbelieves the notion of 'a soul' that is separate from the body.
This creates other doctrinal problems for them.
Matthew 10:28 - "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." (KJV)

The soul lives on after the death of the body.

John 10:28 - "And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand." (KJV)

John 11:25-26 -  (25) "Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: (26) And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?" (KJV)

1 John 5:13 - "These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God." (KJV)

If a person who believes in the Son of God ever were to go out of existence, and simply remain as a memory in God's mind, then Jesus lied, and the Bible is unreliable.

The Watchtower teaches that Jesus was resurrected in a spirit body, not a physical body.

"It is true that Jesus appeared in physical form to his disciples after his resurrection ... Jesus evidently materialized bodies on these occasions, as angels had done in the past when appearing to humans."
[Reasoning book, p.217.]
Don't forget that The Watchtower teaches that Jesus is Michael the archangel [See Part 1of this series].

A big problem for any who hold this view is that the faith of Thomas and the early disciples was based upon being able to see and touch the resurrected Jesus.
Jesus actually said:-
Luke 24:39-40 -  (39) "Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. (40) And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet." (KJV)

The teachings of The Watchtower are really telling us that Jesus was a liar, that He was a spirit, and had simply materialized bodies of flesh.

So The Watchtower disputes both the manner of Christ's death and His resurrection.

Christians and eternal life.

1 John 5:10-13 - (10) "He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. (11) And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. (12) He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. (13) These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. (KJV)

To have eternal life a person must receive the resurrected Jesus into his life.
2 Corinthians 13:5 - "Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?" (KJV)
Colossians 1:27 - "To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:" (KJV)

It is because Christians have recognized that they are sinners, and that Jesus paid the penalty for their individual sins on the cross, that they receive Jesus into their lives.
John 1:12-13 - (12) "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (13) Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." (KJV)
John 3:3 - "Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." (KJV)

No longer is a Christian simply a person of flesh and blood, born of human parents, but by receiving the Lord Jesus Christ, the Christian is now "born again," no longer simply a human, but a human with someone else living inside, namely the Lord Jesus Christ.

Now the Christian has been adopted in God's personal family.
Romans 8:15-16 - (15) "For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. (16) The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:" (KJV)
Galatians 4:5-6 -(5) "To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. (6) And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. (KJV)

This is what being "born again" means. Therefore, because a Christian is "born again," having "the Spirit of His Son" in their hearts, they also receive the life that Jesus has, namely, eternal life.
We read earlier:-
1 John 5:12 - He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. (KJV)

As The Watchtower only holds out being "born again" for their 'heavenly class of 144,000, the vast majority of Jehovah's Witnesses are not "born again."

THE REAL WATCHTOWER GOSPEL

The individual Jehovah's Witness doesn't appreciate what they have got involved in. They have been subjected to an intense teaching programme that takes away their individual and independent thought and activity. They have become 'puppets' of The Watchtower Society.

Worst of all, they have been distanced from the source of their salvation, their only hope of eternal life, Jesus.

You may think this an extreme statement, but it is not, and I will now show you Watchtower control in depth.

The Watchtower Kingdom.

"(1) 'When Jesus spoke about being born again he said that it was necessary in order to enter the Kingdom of God, that is, to be a part of God's Kingdom, his heavenly government. (John 3:5)'" [Reasoning book, p.80.]
"Kingdom may refer to the rulership of the one anointed as King or to the earthly realm ruled by that heavenly government." [Reasoning book, p.226.]
DOES 'KINGDOM' = 'GOVERNMENT'?
'KINGDOM. (Greek) BASILEIA ... is primarily an abstract noun, denoting sovereignty, royal power, dominion ... The Kingdom of God is (a) the sphere of God's rule ... (b) the sphere in which, at any given time, His rule is acknowledged ... speaking generally, references to the Kingdom fall into two classes, the first, in which it is viewed as present and involving suffering for those who enter it ... second, in which it is viewed as future and is associated with reward.'
[Vine's Dictionary of NT Words, Vol. 2, pp.294/5.]

KINGDOM DOES NOT MEAN GOVERNMENT.
Kingdom means 'king's domain,' any area where the king's rulership is accepted and acknowledged.

So it is that true Christians accept the reign of the Lord Jesus Christ in their hearts and lives.

But The Watchtower have said that Kingdom means government, and there are only 144,000 in that government. So the vast majority of Jehovah's Witnesses are not in that government, and are not taught about their need to be "born again." Instead, the Watchtower 'organization' has placed itself in Christ's position as mediator for the rest of Jehovah's Witnesses.
"However, Jesus Christ will not be the only king of God's government. He will have many co-rulers with him in heaven. ... The Bible indicates that those humans who are resurrected to rule with Christ in heaven are limited to 'the hundred and forty-four thousand, who have been bought from the earth'. Rev. 14:1,3.
Of course, any government must have subjects, and Jehovah's Witnesses believe that billions more besides these heavenly rulers will receive everlasting life. Eventually the earth, transformed into a beautiful paradise, will be filled with these worthy subjects of God's Kingdom, all submitting to the reign of Christ and his co-rulers."['WHAT DO JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES BELIEVE?']

Worthy Subjects.

In Part 2, 'The Deity & Person of the Holy Spirit,' I briefly touched on the subject of merit, but we need to discuss this in greater detail.

Quotes from Watchtower material........

"'great crowd.' Now they will be able to stand before the God of holiness on the basis of their own righteousness."

"Jehovah God will justify, declare righteous, on the basis of their own merit all perfected humans who have withstood that final, decisive test of mankind. He will adopt and acknowledge them as his sons through Jesus Christ. (Romans 8:33)"

[LIFE EVERLASTING - IN FREEDOM OF THE SONS OF GOD 1966 pp.392/400.]
Two points to notice here. The first statement is contrary to Scripture, as is the implication in the second statement that their own merit warrants them sonship.

The Bible clearly states:-

Ephesians 2:8-9 - (8) "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves:it is the gift of God: (9) Not of works, lest any man should boast. (KJV)

Jehovah's Witnesses haven't thought this out very clearly, for they are able to hold two opposing elements in the one doctrine of 'Justification by Faith.'
In The Watchtower's reasoning book, page 359, comes the following statement.

"There is no way that a descendant of Abraham can gain salvation on his own, no matter how noble his works are."
REASONING FROM THE SCRIPTURES, 1985, p.359.
Yet dealing with the same issue, the 'Reasoning' book also says:-
Matt. 24:13, RS: "He who endures to the end will be saved." (So a person's final salvation is not determined at the moment that he begins to put faith in Jesus.)
REASONING FROM THE SCRIPTURES, 1985, p.358.
Here The Watchtower is telling us that there is something a person needs to do to retain his salvation. He must continue faithful to the end. In other words, a person could fail after years of faithful service at the very last minute.

Another example of holding forth both 'works of the individual,' and 'the gift of grace' at the same time, is:-

Acts 16:30-32, RS: "'Men, what must I do to be saved?' And they [Paul and Silas] said, 'Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.' And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all that were in his house." (Was that man's 'believing in the Lord Jesus' just a matter of his saying sincerely that he believed? Paul showed that more was required - namely, knowledge and acceptance of the Word of God, as Paul and Silas now proceeded to preach it to the jailer. Would a person's belief in Jesus be genuine if he did not worship the God whom Jesus worshiped, if he did not apply what Jesus taught as to the kind of persons his disciples should be, or if he did not do the work that Jesus commanded his followers to perform? We cannot earn salvation; it is possible only on the basis of faith in the value of Jesus' human life. But our lives must be consistent with the faith that we profess, even though that may involve hardship. At Matthew 10:22 [RS] Jesus said: "He who endures to the end will be saved."
REASONING FROM THE SCRIPTURES, 1985, p.216.
The Watchtower is telling us that we must 'take in knowledge' and endure to the end to be saved. That knowledge can only come through the 'organization' called The Watchtower Society. So enduring to the end also means keeping faithful to that 'organization.' That is why The Watchtower has altered the way Scripture reads, in order to support this necessary knowledge idea.
"This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ."
John 17:3 NWT [Their own translation].
For more information about their specially altered translation, see Part 4, 'The Watchtower Bible.'

A good Bible translation tells you the truth:-
John 17:3 - "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. (KJV)

The word they translate 'taking in knowledge' is 'ginoskosi,' which means 'knowing.'

1097 ginosko {ghin-oce'-ko} 1) to learn to know, come to know, get a knowledge of perceive, feel. 1a) to become known. 2) to know, understand, perceive, have knowledge of. 2a) to understand. 2b) to know. 3) ....... 4) to become acquainted with, to know. [Strong's.] For Synonyms see entry 5825. [Strong's.]
Synonyms.
See Definition for 1097, 1492, 1987, 4920. The big difference is, getting to know the Lord personally. But The Watchtower has become the mediator for Jehovah's Witnesses in place of Jesus. But Jehovah's Witnesses are really taught that we can only know God and His Son through their 'organization.' So only The Watchtower can give out that knowledge.
"Consider, too, the fact that Jehovah's organization alone, in all the earth, is directed by God's holy spirit or active force. (Zech. 4:5) Only this organization functions for Jehovah's purpose and to his praise. To it alone God's Sacred Word, the Bible, is not a sealed book. Many persons of the world are very intelligent, capable of understanding complex matters. They can read the Holy Scriptures, but they cannot understand their deep meaning. Yet God's people can comprehend such spiritual things. Why? Not because of special intelligence on their part, but as the apostle Paul declared: "For it is to us God had revealed them through his spirit, for the spirit searches into all things, even the deep things of God." (1 Cor. 2:10) Jesus Christ praised his heavenly Father for 'hiding such things from the wise and intellectual ones but revealing them to babes.' (Matt.11:25)
How very much true Christians appreciate associating with the only organization on earth that understands the "deep things of God"!
THE WATCHTOWER JULY 1, 1973, P.402.
The whole purpose of The Watchtower is to show itself as indispensable to its followers.

Another important point we need to consider about The Watchtower gospel is that in the same way they tell us Christ is only the mediator for the 'heavenly class,' the 144,000, so Christ's sacrifice only applies specifically for them.

"We cannot earn salvation; it is possible only on the basis of faith in the value of Jesus' human life."
REASONING FROM THE SCRIPTURES, 1985, p.216.

What does the term 'the value of Jesus' human life' mean according to Watchtower teaching?

"By his disobedience the perfect man Adam lost perfect life on a paradise earth for himself and all his children. Jesus Christ gave his own perfect life to buy back what Adam lost. Yes, Jesus "gave himself a corresponding ransom for all." (1 Timothy 2:5,6) Because he was a perfect man, even as Adam had been, Jesus is called "the last Adam." (1 Corinthians 15:45) No human other than Jesus could have provided the ransom. This is because Jesus is the only man who ever lived that was equal to Adam as a perfect human son of God. - Psalm 49:7; Luke 1:32; 3:38."(from "YOU CAN LIVE FOREVER IN PARADISE ON EARTH," 1982, pp.62,63.)
The teaching of The Watchtower is that Jesus was simply replacing Adam as a "corresponding ransom." So Jesus died for Adam's sins alone.
To whom first was the merit of Jesus' sacrifice applied, and with what objective?
... (The invitation to benefit from the provision for salvation through Christ was extended first to the Jews, then to non-Jews.) ... Eph. 1:11-14: ... which is a token in advance of our inheritance, for the purpose of releasing by a ransom God's own possession, to his glorious praise." (That inheritance, as shown at 1 Peter 1:4, is reserved in the heavens. Revelation 14:1-4 indicates that those who share in it number 144,000. Along with Christ, these will serve as kings and priests over mankind for 1,000 years, during which God's purpose for the earth to be a paradise populated by perfect offspring of the first human pair will be accomplished.
REASONING BOOK, 1985, p.308.
Who else in our day are experiencing benefits from Jesus' sacrifice?
John 10:16: "I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; those also I must bring, and they will listen to my voice, and they will become one flock, one shepherd." (These "other sheep" come under the loving care of Jesus Christ while the remnant of the "little flock" of Kingdom heirs is still on earth; thus the "other sheep" can be associated with the Kingdom heirs as part of the "one flock." They all enjoy many of the same benefits from Jesus' sacrifice, but not identically so, because they have different destinies.)
REASONING BOOK, 1985, p.309.
In the preceding quotation from the 'Reasoning' book, we can clearly see the two destinies, and the separation of the two classes; the "little flock," heaven bound, and the "other sheep," earthbound.

Notice that these "other sheep" benefit from God's provision in Christ by their associating with the "remnant of the little flock still on earth." This 144,000 are dying away, just about 7,000 remaining alive on earth. (This number is worked out by counting those who partake of 'The Memorial,' The Watchtower's annual communion. Only those claiming to be of the heavenly class [closed in 1935] partake.)
So while The Watchtower pays allegiance to "saved by grace," those specifically saved are the "little flock" of 144,000 in that heavenly government. The "other sheep" benefit by being associated with the 'organization' founded by that Kingdom class.

"HOW PERFECTION COMES ABOUT
However, full perfection of body will evidently come only as the individual, because of his faith in Christ, makes spiritual progress in 'putting on the new personality.' Even though a person has been healed of major disabilities, as he practices that which is right he will come nearer and nearer to perfection."
LIFE DOES HAVE A PURPOSE, 1977, p.172.
"But something else makes it even more desirable that we survive. What is it? The fact that all who become part of the "new earth" will also have the opportunity to be liberated from their own imperfections, from sickness and a life of pain, yes even from death. ... As the selecting of persons to make up the heavenly class drew to its close, the gathering of the great crowd of "other sheep" began, especially from 1935 onward. ... The millennial Judgement Day for mankind will begin. Jesus Christ will be the Presiding Judge, and he will see that all are given full opportunity and ample help so that they can learn Jehovah's righteous ways and comply with them. ... Then, after passing a final test at the end of the thousand years, they will be adopted by Jehovah God through Christ as God's own sons, as part of His perfect universal family."
SURVIVAL INTO A NEW EARTH, 1984, pp.98-104.
"That Kingdom is the key to your future. Simply stated, it is a government, God's means of ruling earth. The Kingdom government will forcibly wrest control of earth from human hands. (Daniel 2:44) ... Secure under the management of God's Kingdom, the earth will gradually become a global paradise. (Luke 23:43) A perfect ecological balance will thus return."
QUESTIONS THAT YOUNG PEOPLE ASK, 1989, p.307.
"Under the direction of Jesus and his associate kings [the heavenly class of 144,000] the survivors of Armageddon will clean up the ruins left by that righteous war. ... In time Jesus will bring forth untold millions from their graves to enjoy this beautiful Paradise. ... Under Jesus' loving attention, the entire human family -Armageddon survivors, their offspring, and the thousands of millions of resurrected dead who obey him - will grow toward human perfection. ... By the end of Jesus' Thousand Year Reign, the situation will be just as God originally purposed when he told the first human pair, Adam and Eve, to multiply and fill the earth. Yes, the earth will be filled with a righteous race of perfect humans. This is because of Jesus' ransom sacrifice will have been applied to everyone. ... Well, by the end of the thousand years, most of those living in Paradise will be resurrected ones who have never had their faith tested. ... But if Satan was given opportunity to try to stop them from continuing to serve God, would they prove loyal under test? To resolve this question, Satan will be released."
THE GREATEST MAN WHO EVER LIVED, 1991, chapter 133.
The Watchtower Society has it all planned out. Basically, God has selected only one organization on earth today to reveal the new and different 'good news' to mankind. That organization is the one to whom we must belong if we are to get eternal life.
"..................No doubt, before the "great tribulation" is finished, we will see the greatest witness to God's name and kingdom in the history of this world. And while now the witness yet includes the invitation to come to Jehovah's organization for salvation, the time no doubt will come when the message takes on a harder tone, like a "great war cry"." Revelation 16:21.
THE WATCHTOWER, NOVEMBER 15, 1981, p.21, par.18.
".............What does God require of those who will reside forever upon his Paradise earth? Let us examine four basic requirements. .....................
A third requirement is that we be associated with God's channel, his organization. God has always used an organization. For example, only those in the ark in Noah's day survived the Flood, and only those associated with the Christian congregation in the first century had God's favor. (Acts 4:12) Similarly, Jehovah is using only one organization today to accomplish his will. To receive everlasting life in the earthly Paradise we must identify that organization and serve God as part of it."
THE WATCHTOWER, FEBRUARY 15, 1983, p.12.
This, then, is the Watchtower 'good news.' Clearly it is a very different Gospel from that set out in Scripture, and preached by the early church, and traditional, evangelical Christians today. If you, my reader, are one of Jehovah's Witnesses, or are involved with studying with them, how should you react?
"Knowing these things, what will you do? It is obvious that the true God, who is himself "the God of truth" and who hates lies, will not look with favor on persons who cling to organizations that teach falsehood. (Psalm 31:5; Proverbs 6:16-19) And, really, would you want to be even associated with a religion that had not been honest with you?"
IS THIS LIFE ALL THERE IS? 1974, p.46.

THE BIBLE IS GOD'S WORD.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 -  (16) "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: (17) That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. (KJV)

What you must do is sit down and pray to our heavenly Father to guide you into all truth. Jesus promised that He would send the Holy Spirit to do just that. (John 16:13).

As you re-read the texts that The Watchtower Society have used to support their brand of 'good news,' you will discover that they frequently take them out of context, or misapply them.

For example, think of the term 'little flock.' (Luke 12:32) The reason that Jesus used the term was in contrast to verse one, where we are told:
Luke 12:1 - "In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy." (KJV)

They were a "little flock" at the time. But it wasn't going to remain so. Jesus told Thomas:
John 20:29 - "Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed." (KJV)

Revelation chapter seven identifies these ones as a great multitude: Revelation 7:9 - "After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;" (KJV)

Also, it tells us in Revelation 7:15 "Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. (KJV)

At first this may present you with a difficulty, because Jehovah's Witnesses are taught that only the 144,000 are heaven bound. So should this "great multitude" be in heaven, in God's temple? YES! Those who are going to heaven to be a kingdom of priests share the same description as the "great multitude"....... Revelation 5:9-10 - (9) "And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; (10) And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth." (KJV)

Revelation 19:1 - "And after these things I heard a great voice of much people ['great crowd' in WT Bible] in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God:" (KJV)

FINALLY Jesus invites us: Matthew 11:28 - "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (KJV)

We need no organization to belong to get saved. We simply need to come to Jesus:-
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Acts 4:12 (KJV)
